Review: Mobee Magic Bar for Apple Wireless Keyboard and Trackpad

“The Magic Bar™ from Mobee Technology is the world’s first inductive charger for the Apple Wireless Keyboard & Magic Trackpad. A Magical solution to recharge your input devices that takes only 1 minute to setup!” – Mobee official website

A few weeks ago, Mobee was kind enough to send a review unit of the Mobee Magic Bar to me. I’ve reviewed another one of their products before, the Mobee Magic Charger for Apple Magic Mouse and I really liked the product, so I was really excited to to get my hands on this. And I haven’t been disappointed.

Design and Functionality

I really like the design of the Magic Bar – it merges great functionality and good built quality into one product. The material used with the product is the exact same as the Apple Wireless keyboard and Magic Trackpad, so it really does look right when both are put together. It doesn’t look obtrusive at all. The battery pack doesn’t fit flush with the keyboard, which is a little disappointing as it somewhat ruins the look of the overall package, but it’s not a big deal. The only thing I have against the product is that where the keyboard or trackpad slides into the charging dock, there is no padding, and consequently, that area can get a bit scratched up – something I’d really like to see improved upon in future iterations of the product.

Battery Life

Battery life is really decent on the product. When fully charged you can remove the keyboard from the dock or you can keep it in there, and use it like a wired keyboard. With several hours use every single day, I’ve got a few days with the product, sometimes up to a week. Personally, I think it’s decent enough, especially as it doesn’t take too long to charge.

General Usage

The product is powered by USB, and can be charged through your Mac’s USB port or through an AC adapter using an outlet on the wall. The initial setup is very easy and makes the product more enjoyable.

This is one heck of a product. It’s the perfect partner for your Apple Wireless Keyboard or Magic Trackpad. Do keep in mind though that when used with the Magic Trackpad, there will be overhang on the charging station itself. It comes at a price though – £54.95 through the official distributor in the UK, €59.90 on the Mobee website for Europe and $59.99 in the US, however, if you shop around online, I’m pretty sure you’ll find a discount.
